Supporting You Through Pregnancy with Reflexology

Pregnancy is such a special and exciting time, but it can also ask a lot of you, both physically and emotionally. Your body is constantly changing and working incredibly hard to support your growing baby, while everyday life carries on around you. As your pregnancy progresses, tiredness, disrupted sleep, physical discomfort and a busy mind can all become part of the experience, making it even more important to find opportunities to slow down and look after yourself. Pregnancy reflexology offers a wonderfully calming way to do just that, giving you dedicated time to rest, switch off and enjoy some much-needed nurturing.
Pregnancy reflexology is a gentle form of reflexology adapted to take into account the changes happening within your body during pregnancy. I work with pregnant women during their second and third trimesters, tailoring each treatment to you, how you’re feeling and what you need on the day. So much attention during pregnancy naturally focuses on your growing baby, from appointments and scans to preparing for their arrival, so having an hour that is entirely about you can feel particularly valuable.
Relaxation and wellbeing during pregnancy

One of the main reasons women come to me for reflexology during pregnancy is relaxation. Hormonal and physical changes can affect sleep, energy levels and general wellbeing, while the anticipation of becoming a new parent can mean there is plenty going through your mind too. Reflexology provides an opportunity to step away from all of that for a while and allow your body to deeply relax. Many women find their treatments incredibly calming and enjoy having regular appointments as part of their self-care throughout pregnancy.
As your bump grows, reflexology can also provide some welcome time off your feet. Pregnancy can leave your feet and legs feeling tired and your body generally in need of a little extra care. Reflexology shouldn't replace medical or maternity care, but it can sit alongside it as a complementary therapy, providing a nurturing space to relax and support your overall sense of wellbeing.
What does the research say?
There is a growing body of research exploring the potential benefits of reflexology during pregnancy and labour. A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 randomised controlled trials involving 1,088 pregnant women found promising evidence that reflexology may help to reduce anxiety and labour pain and may be associated with a shorter duration of labour. The researchers did, however, highlight limitations in the quality of the available studies and concluded that larger, high-quality trials are still needed. Read the 2023 systematic review
A further systematic review and meta-analysis published in 2024, which included 13 randomised controlled studies and 1,189 pregnant women, also reported positive findings for anxiety, pain, duration of labour and birth satisfaction. Again, these findings are encouraging rather than conclusive, but they add to the research exploring reflexology as a supportive complementary therapy during pregnancy and childbirth. For me, this is an important distinction. Reflexology isn't about making promises to treat particular pregnancy symptoms or influence the outcome of your birth. It is about supporting you during pregnancy, giving your body and mind the opportunity to relax and providing a little dedicated time for yourself.
Reflexology as you approach your due date
Reflexology can feel particularly lovely towards the end of pregnancy, when excitement is building but you may also be feeling tired, uncomfortable and more than ready to meet your baby. It’s also around this time that I’m often asked whether reflexology can help to induce labour.
As reflexologists, we never claim that reflexology can induce labour, and a treatment cannot guarantee that labour will begin. However, some women do find that labour begins shortly after a reflexology treatment when they are already approaching their due date. Whether this is simply timing, or whether the deep relaxation experienced during treatment plays a part, isn't something we can know from the current evidence. The aim of reflexology at this stage is therefore not to try to make labour happen, but to help you feel calm, relaxed and supported while your body naturally prepares for birth.
Some well-deserved time for you

Pregnancy can quickly become filled with appointments, preparations, lists and conversations about your baby, and it’s easy for your own needs to slip further down the list. Reflexology gives you permission to stop for an hour, get comfortable, close your eyes and let someone else look after you. Whether you’re looking for some peaceful time away from everyday life, support with relaxation and general wellbeing, or simply a little extra nurturing as your bump grows, pregnancy reflexology can be a lovely addition to your pregnancy journey. After all, while you’re busy growing and caring for your baby, you deserve to be looked after too!
