Nutrigenomics

Do you ever wonder why some diets work for others but not for you? Or why you feel sluggish or bloated after eating certain foods? Why do you always seem to get worse hangovers than everybody else or why are you jittery and anxious after 1 coffee whilst others can drink it all day long with no ill-effects? Why are you constantly exhausted but still can't sleep?

The answers are in your genes!

What is nutrigenomics?

Nutrigenomics is the study of the interactions between nutrition, genes and your health. Your DNA can influence how well you absorb and use specific nutrients, which affects your individual nutrient requirements. We are not all the same and common variations or differences in our genetic code affect gene function. These differences do not create ill-health in themselves but are part of the bigger picture of health and can affect aspects including your vitamin and mineral status, hormone production, detoxification, cell growth and repair, energy production, metabolism and mental health.

Nutrigenomic testing is a specific type of genetic testing which will help you understand how well your genes and body are functioning. Whilst we can’t change our genes, we can use nutrition and lifestyle interventions to improve their function and compensate for any genetic differences that could be impacting health.

What can nutrigenomics tell me?

Genetic testing can help you get to the root cause of your health issues. Knowing your DNA is a powerful tool which can help you prevent illness and achieve your health goals, whether that's weight loss, hormonal balance, better mood, more energy or improved overall wellbeing. Understanding your genetic profile enables you to make personalised choices about food, supplements and lifestyle that really work for you. With a simple nutrigenomics test, you'll get personalised insights into areas like:

Metabolism & Weight Management
Understand how your genes affect appetite regulation and food intake - are you always hungry and never full? You might be genetically wired towards over-eating. Learn how your body processes carbs and sugar and if your genetics are putting you at increased risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Would fasting help you to lose weight? Discover how your body process, transports and stores fat, burns energy and responds to protein and exercise, helping you formulate the most effective weight-loss strategy for your genetics.

Vitamin & Nutrient Needs
Find out if your body has trouble absorbing key vitamins (like B12, D, or folate), and which nutrients you may need to increase your intake of to optimise your levels and prevent deficiency. Maybe your genetics are affecting your absorption of iron from the gut, resulting in iron overload or deficiency? Do you need a higher intake of omega 3 fatty acids to protect your body from inflammation and support brain function?

Heart Health
Discover how your genes might be affecting your cholesterol markers or putting you at risk of high blood pressure. Are you genetically more prone to inflammation? Find out how you can use this information to improve your heart health and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Mental Wellness
Understand how your genetic makeup affects levels of brain chemicals. Are you genetically wired to experience low mood, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorders, impulsive or addictive behaviours, anger or aggression? Diving into the genetics surrounding your nervous system can often help to explain certain behaviours and personality traits, whilst at the same time helping to ensure you have the nutrients your brain needs to help it function at its best.

Your Stress Response
Find out how genes influence how you react to stress and how long it takes you to recover. Some people are wired to stay in “fight or flight” longer due to slower breakdown of adrenaline, and this insight can help as part of a stress-management plan.

Sleep Quality & Circadian Rhythm
Are you genetically programmed to be an early bird or a night owl? Are you genetically predisposed to early waking, and if so, what can you do about it? Uncover genetic factors that impact how easily you fall asleep and/or stay asleep, so you can stop fighting your biology and feel rested.

Food Sensitivities & Detoxification
See how your genes handle substances like caffeine, alcohol, lactose or gluten. Are you more sensitive to mould toxicity? Discover how well does your liver processes paracetamol and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), helping you choose your most effective pain-relief. Discover how well you detox from everyday toxins and substances, to help you make informed diet and lifestyle choices.

Hormonal Imbalances, PMS and Perimenopause
Understand how your genes impact oestrogen metabolism, are you genetically more likely to have higher oestrogen levels? Investigate genes relating to progesterone, affecting levels and the ability for progesterone to activate calming brain chemicals. Are you genetically more prone to the more potent androgenic form of testosterone, which might increase your risk of conditions such as PCOS?  Finally look into your stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline and how they can impact your body’s natural rhythms, disrupting the entire hormone cascade.

How does it work?

I work with Lifecode Gx® - the UK's leading experts in nutrigenomics testing and education.

1. You purchase a DNA Test from Lisa Fossey Nutrition.

2. You will be emailed a short questionnaire to complete.

3. I order the test from Lifecode Gx® and the test kit is sent to your house.

4. You complete a simple swab of the inside of your cheek and return it to the Lifecode Gx® laboratory in the post using the envelope provided.

Genetic test results are fixed as our genetics don't change, so your results are for life and you won't need to repeat the test. You may, however, wish to view your results through a different lens at different stages in your life, as things change and different health issues or symptoms arise.

Nutrigenomics FAQs

How do I collect the sample? The DNA test is really easy to do! Full instructions will be sent with the test. You simply need to swab the inside of your cheek for one minute. The test must be done minimum 1 hour away from food, drink and brushing teeth.

Is my data confidential and secure? Yes, data privacy and protection is highly prioritised by Lisa Fossey Nutrition and Lifecode Gx. All data is confidential and kept securely and will not be disclosed or sold to any third parties. All DNA data will be destroyed 6 months after analysis.

Does anything affect the results? No, the DNA test is not affected by any dietary approaches, pregnancy, exercise, medications, contraceptives, HRT, herbs or supplements.

Can I order if I live outside the UK? Yes, test kits can be sent to most countries in the world with a few exceptions. Additional shipping charges will apply outside of the UK, please contact me to enquire.

How long will it take to get the results? Once the sample has been received at the lab, results usually take 3-4 weeks. Once I have your estimated results date from Lifecode GX, we can book in your consultation.

How accurate are the results? The genotyping data is more than 99.9% accurate. Lifecode Gx nutrigenomics specialists ensure accurate, evidence-based interpretation of results alongside clinically and practically relevant recommendations. Results that fail quality control are not reported and are shown on the report as a ‘no result’.

How do I know which genetic report is the best choice for me? If you're unsure which report to do, please contact me using the form below. Once I know more about your health and what you'd like to find out, I can advise you on which report(s) will be the most beneficial. Often doing more than 1 report will provide a greater insight, but if you are only able to do 1, I can advise you which will be the most useful. You also have the option to add additional reports to the same DNA sample for 6 months after the test, which can help to spread the cost.

I've changed my mind about the test, can I get a refund? If you change your mind in the first 14 days after ordering and return the unopened test kit to me, I will issue a refund for the order less a £10 admin fee. If the test kit has been opened or if more than 14 days have passed, unfortunately you cannot receive a refund.

Can children take the test? Yes, children can be tested with a parent or guardian’s consent. When testing a child under 18 years of age a parent or guardian with parental responsibility for the child can provide consent on the child's behalf. Since our genes are fixed from birth, the age of testing makes no difference to the results. You only need to be tested once, because your genetics don’t change.
