About
Nutritional Therapy
What is Nutritional Therapy?
Nutritional therapy is personalised nutrition, meaning it doesn't follow a one-size-fits-all approach to health. It recognises that YOU are unique and need a personalised nutrition and lifestyle programme that works for you (but most likely not for the next person).
Nutritional Therapy practitioners follow the model of functional medicine and can be thought of as health detectives. This means they recognise that your symptoms are being caused by an imbalance in your body and will try to find out what that imbalance is. Once they’ve found it, they will try to address it to fix the issue, rather than focusing on the symptom itself. An example of this is high blood pressure. Your GP may prescribe a medication, but your nutritional therapist will try to find out what is causing your high blood pressure, and address that to try and bring it back down.
As part of their detective work, a nutritional therapist will consider your family history, medical history, health timeline, current diet and lifestyle, and might also recommend functional testing for further investigation. These tests could include DNA testing, stool testing to look at your gut health, or blood tests to check your thyroid function, hormones or nutrient levels.
Nutritional Therapists spend hours researching behind the scenes, to dive deeper into their clients’ conditions and symptoms. They formulate evidence-informed nutrition and lifestyle programmes, with supplement regimens where needed, tailored to their clients’ individual needs.
Disclaimer
Registered Nutritional Therapy Practitioners do not diagnose or treat disease and recommendations are not a replacement for medical advice. Any client presenting with ‘red flag’ symptoms will always be referred to a medical practitioner for investigation. Nutritional Therapy Practitioners work alongside any other medical or healthcare professionals involved in a client’s care and explain any nutritional therapy programme that has been provided.
